What is a PWA?

A progressive web app (PWA) is a website that looks and behaves as if it is a mobile app. PWAs are built to take advantage of native mobile device features, without requiring the end user to visit an app store, make a purchase and download software locally. Instead, a PWA can be located with a search engine query and accessed immediately through a browser.

What should I choose, a native app or a PWA?

There’s a lot to like about both native and Progressive Web Apps and the choice is dependent on your needs.

You want a retail app that makes it easy for your customers to interact with and shop with you when they’re not in your store? PWAs are a good fit. PWAs put small businesses onto a more competitive playing field.

You want something that takes full advantage of the smartphone and its capabilities? Native apps are the way to go. For a business that can afford one, even through a DIY app builder, the ability to GEOfence and reach customers when they’re nearby could be worth the price difference all on its own.

What are the ongoing costs?

It depends. If you choose to go down the native app route there will be annual costs to keep your app live. They start at about £250 per year. If you opt for a PWA, there is a one-off cost in setting up and building the app.
